Of Kyoto's sister cities: Boston in U.S., Prague in Czech, Zagreb in Croatia, Kiev in Ukraine, Cologne in Germany, Xi'an in China and other cities, I choose Florence in Italy. This box contains a soup and is sold at the oldest pharmacy in the world, Officina profumo farmaceutica di S. M. Novella in Firence, but I bought it at its branch at Kyoto. The froth is silky and the scent is absolutely elegant and I love it.

At the entrance of traditional shops and restaurants in Kyoto is such cloth, called noren, hung. Most of traditional wooden buildings have sliding doors at the entrance and the cloth goes very well with the door. The clothes have a purpose and if the cloth is hung, it shows that a shop is open.

This is Shoji, thin paper tightened on the flame of the window in an old fashion. In those days we had no technique to make a big thin paper (or no money to afford to buy a large and expensive thin paper) to cover the whole frame, so some pieces of small papers covered the frames. The joints was usually just on the smaller frame inside not to be eye-catching. But this paper is tightened to show up the joints deliberately. The manner is, now, used only for the window of rooms for tea ceremony to add the certain modest rhythm to a tiny and tranquil space.

Joints make rhythm. The way of thinking goes well with modern architecture, such as the rhythmical facade of Couvent de la Tourette in France, designed by Le Corbusier and a talented Greek musician, Iannis Xenakis.

By the way, today's post is 600th on this blog! As I write before, I will stop this blog when the post reaches 1000. I would be very happy if the blog conveys the beauty of Kyoto to anyone who never go there.

Theme day, Water

This is called 'Chozu-ya', a stone basin with some wooden spoons to clean one's hands and mouths before we go to main buildings of shrines to pray. Deities of Shinto religion love the purity and cleaning one's hands and mouths also means cleaning one's hearts.

How to clean:
Clean hands first by the wooden spoon, and then put some water on one's palms to take water into one's mouth. Never set the wooden spoon to one's lips.

This flower is called Tsubaki in Japan, Camellia, very popular in Japan and often used in tea ceremony as a decoration of Tokonoma, the main alcove of tatami room for guests. But only buds are used in the ceremony, never used the opened flower. Why are buds Tsubaki preferred in the tea ceremony?

Masters of tea ceremony specially love the sense of simple-yet-elegant, which is one of important elements of the beauty senses in tea ceremony.

The beauty of tea ceremony is, in a sense, the beauty of harmony. The aesthetic of harmony is made up with the mixture of many kinds of tea tools with a set of players' graceful carriages. Each elements is totally simple and modest and should never be showy and prominent. Excessiveness would break the harmony. Full opened flowers are thought to be rather gaudy in the realm of tranquility. The bloom would break the harmony based on the sense of the tea ceremony. A choir in a small town never needs superstars such as Luciano Pararotti or Placido Domingo.

Tea ceremony is consisted of simple yet elegant ones, and creates deep and long-lasting beauty.

By the way, Tsubaki's flower language says that this flower means natural beauty, simple elegance and modest. And, Shiseido, a leading Japanese cosmetics company, has used this flower as its trademark.

This is a tiny cup for drinking Japanese sake and the pattern inside is popular for us. When we drink it, we use this type of cup or non-pattern cup. Sake masters usually use it to check the clearance and color and the pattern seems to makes the nature more visible.

By the way, the pattern is called 'sneak's eye', Janome in Japanese, and also have a meaning to keep evil sprits away. So using this pattern is very reasonable because the Sake is thought to be very pure, sacred and religious and often used for shrine's ritual.
