Maiko, being about to go out

Maiko, being about to go out, Gion, Kyoto
Maikos seem to work very hard because they always need to dress up and wear many clothes of kimono even in the middle of summer. Kyoto's summer is very humid and hot, so even an hour walk only with T-shrit in the sunny day in summer make us sweat. But, strangely enough, dressed geikos, as their experiences enlarges, don't get sweat so much evern in such a hot and humid day.

Noren, a curtain of a shop 2

Noren, a curtain of a shop 2, Kyoto
This white cloth is a Noren, hang at the entrance of Japanese restaurant, showing people outside that the shop is open now.

By the way, the mixture of the Chinese character and the illustration says, a bird, Tori(鳥) in Japanese. The shape of this character derives from the shape of some bird.

Only one Chinese character can have a specific meaning, quite unlike the alphabet. But it is rather hard to learn the characters. Because there are a lot of characters, compared with the alphabet. The alphabet is only 26 but Chinese characters, used in Japanese newspaper, are said to be more than 3,000.

I think it is hard for foreigners to learn Japanese partly because of a lot of Chinese characters.

To Raquel,
We have learned about 1,000 characters in 6 years of elementary school and other 1,000 in 3 years of junior high school. So take it easy!!

Tai, a kind of fish for happiness

This is called Tai, sea red bream, and is thought as a kind of fish for happiness.

This fish is served at the dinner of Japanese-way wedding ceremony and dedicated to the gods at shrine.

We eat it as sashimi, sliced raw fish, with soy sauce, or kobujime, the one rolled up and tasted with kelp, or shio-yaki, the one grilled with some shake of salt, or tai-chazuke, the one together with boiled rice and tasted soup with some fish.

Traditional and ecological taxi, rickshaw

This is rickshaw and best for sightseeing in a sunny day.
The word, rickshaw, comes from jinrikisha(人力車), a vehicle that moves by man power in Japanese.
By the way, here is a modern and ecological taxi, velotaxi.

Theme Day for the month of 1, May: City Exchange

Melting pot

This photo is just kidding and on the photo attached are faces of some members of DP and some friends.

Kyoto is not melting pot like NYC or other cities, but many people from other countries go there for traveling.

P.S.
Dear Eric, Abraham, Chan, Bunyamin, Valery, Mark,
Thanks for allowing me to use the photo:-))

Many Daily Photo sites are participating in the 1st May theme, "City Exchange". Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.
